THE EFFECT OF PARITY, BISHOP SCORE AND CERVICAL LENGTH BY TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND IN PREDICTION OF INDUCTION TO DELIVERY INTERVAL

AIM: To evaluate the role of parity, Bishop score, cervical length by transvaginal ultrasound in predicting the induction to delivery interval.

METHODS AND MATERIALS: It is a prospective study done at Government general Hospital, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, India over a period of one year from August 2008 to July 2009. Hundred pregnant women with 37 to 42 weeks of gestation who underwent induction of labour for different indications were taken. Their parity according to obstetric history, Bishop Score followed by cervical length in centimeters by transvaginal ultrasound was assessed in all patients.

RESULTS: Among the hundred pregnant women 57 were primigravidae, they had mean induction delivery interval of 17 hours and 18 minutes. Multigravidae were 43, they had 11 hours 45 minutes mean induction delivery interval. Bishop score of 5 and cervical length by transvaginal ultrasound of 2.8cm were considered as cutoff values. Bishop score ≤5, cervical length above >2.8cm were considered unfavorable. Among total 100 women, 76 women had Bishop score ≤5, in them 16 hours 12 minutes mean induction delivery interval was noted. Bishop score >5 was noted in 24 women who had 13 hours and 10 minutes mean induction to delivery interval. When cervical length was considered, among total 100 women, 45 women had cervical length >2.8cm, in them mean induction to delivery interval was 21 hours and 4 minutes, whereas 55 women had cervical length ≤2.8cm in them mean induction to delivery interval was 11 hours and 2 minutes.

CONCLUSION: All the three parameters i.e. Parity, Bishop score and cervical length by transvaginal ultrasound are having significant predictability towards induction to delivery interval. Out of these three parameters parity and cervical length are having independent predictability.
