BACKGROUND
Patients with obstructive jaundice constitute significant proportion of patients presenting with jaundice at our hospital. In present study it is proposed to investigate primarily the diagnostic accuracy of MRCP and ERCP in defining aetiology, level of obstruction in obstructive jaundice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
A prospective study conducted on 25 adult patients excluding paediatric population. A total of 17 male, 8 female subjects were evaluated in mean age group of 22 to 79 years. MRCP followed by ERCP was done in all patients.
RESULTS
The study group was defined into 3 groups: Stone – group I, Neoplastic – Group II, Non- Neoplastic Group-III. MRCP and ERCP had a success rate of 100% & 83% respectively to identify calculi in group-I, 100% & 73% respectively to identify neoplastic disease process in group-II 100%& 75% respectively for identifying non–neoplastic cause in group-III.
CONCLUSION
Diagnostic accuracy of MRCP and ERCP are comparable while MRCP scores over ERCP in failed ERCP cases. MRCP has 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity in stone disease and can be used as noninvasive alternative to ERCP. ERCP has more therapeutic value compared to MRCP.
