BACKGROUND Smoking affects the cardiovascular system. Based on the hypothesis that nicotine by various mechanisms augments sympathetic outflow and/or attenuates parasympathetic activity which, directly or indirectly increases the heart rate. The present study was designed to compare resting heart rate in smokers and non-smokers and to assess the effect of duration of smoking on resting heart rate.
